Primarily formed from the breakdown of dead plant leaves and other organic material, the build-up of silt within a lake, pond or river can have serious consequences on the future of that water and any life there is within it.
Also it can lead to a reduction in the depth of the pond increasing risks of flooding and the process of biological decomposition releases nasty smelling odours.
We undertake silt removal, silt dredging and silt pumping works in ponds, lakes and streams both natural and artificial. We are adept at minimising the impact of these works on the environment and the surrounding fauna and flora.
We use our custom-designed and very garden-friendly silt pumping attachment to our Truxor machinery a handling requirements and the type of silt/debris to be dealt with.
We have two types of silt pump that can be used for different types of silt materials and density’s. With the use of our excavator arm we can loosen any harder material on the water bed and then follow up with a silt pump to remove the loosened material from the water.
Ways of Disposing of Silt – The most significant problem to overcome silt removal when dealing with large quantities is what to do with the material. If it is not to be shipped off site (an expensive alternative) solutions for its storage, drying out and eventual dispersal on site must be found. We’ve devised and developed methods for stacking and drying silt in confined sites that appear, at first glance, to have no obvious solution.
De-Watering or Silt Bags – To be able to use de-watering bags, they are required to be placed on flat land to prevent any movement of the bags. Once the silt has been pumped into the bags they are allowed to de-water and leave a fabric bag full of pure silt. Once dried these bags can be opened and used for any landscaping needs or all the dried material could be removed from site.
Using a Nicospan Membrane – Installing a permeable membrane around the water’s edge to create a new bank in the desired shape and size. The silt can then be either pumped or lifted with the clamshell bucket. The silt is left behind as the water separates through the membrane. Once filled and begun to dry, planting with marginal plants gives a new aesthetically pleasing border to the waters edge. The membrane can be set at the required depth to match the desired planting and bank edge.
Spreading Over Flat Land The silt can be removed from the water and disposed on land in the close vicinity. It can either be spread evenly over the land and left to allow the vegetation to grow back through, piled up behind a temporary bund to allow removal to different parts of the site once the material has dried or left spread out evenly behind the bund, which is just used to prevent any silt escaping onto sloped areas. Future uses of the dried out silt if left on site; Gardening as a top soil > To even out land > Landscaping > Planting Beds
Removal From Site –When the silt is removed from the water it can be instantly transported off site to another location. This is an option when there is not sufficient land to pump the silt onto or land where silt bags can sit and de-water. The silt would be piled up or pumped straight into the desired transport and then taken to the desired location.
If you would like to learn more about how we might be able to help you solve your issue, please contact us and we can have an informal chat to discuss the areas that interest you.
We will have a conversation that is completely free of charge so we can learn more about your needs and challenges and utilise Google Earth to be able to discuss any project with more clarity and detail.
All of our quotations are provided free of charge and in the case of larger jobs we would undertake a site survey.
